At HOPE worldwide, we believe what we do to support our local neighbors in their time of need matters, and how we engage is just as important. Our U.S. Programs team is one of HOPE worldwide’s most valuable resources because they equip and train our staff and thousands of volunteers across the U.S. on mutual, respectful, Biblical justice-informed, and strength-based community engagement.
1. Engage with neighbors experiencing homelessness in ways that are respectful and mutually beneficial. Watch HOPE worldwide’s Volunteer Webinar, “What To Do When Someone Asks You for Money on the Street” and check out this tip sheet for great ideas and inspiration.
2.
Collect items to support neighbors who are in need of a little help – and partner with to organizations to help distribute in a way which honors your neighbors. Watch HOPE
worldwide’s Volunteer Webinar, “How to Honor Your Neighbor’s Dignity When Donating” for more on this and check out our tip sheet on planning a
Community Christmas Store
here.
3.
Address local food insecurity – check out
this tip sheet for great ideas on how to do this, either by yourself or with a group.
4.
Support new neighbors who are refugees from other countries
–
start by reaching out to a local organization that is providing assistance and sign up to volunteer with them; or, if you are aware of new neighbors from Afghanistan or other countries, be a good neighbor and reach out directly to welcome them and see if you can be of support. Check out
this tip sheet and
this informative interview about how to respectfully engage with new neighbors from Afghanistan. Or consider teaming up with some friends and a local community organization and starting an
English Conversation Club.
5.
Host a Sunday Supper. You don't have to wait until MLK Day to share a meal and meaningful dialogue with neighbors who could use a little extra community support. Click
here for more.
6. Multiply your efforts by engaging your local congregation or others as a group. Click here to review Five Steps to Planning Community Outreach. For more resources about setting up or growing your HOPE worldwide Chapter, or HOPEww Scouts Troop, visit hopeww.org/chapterresources. For an inspiring message on the Biblical importance of engaging with our neighbors who experience material poverty or are in need, check out the Shalom: Righteousness, Community and Loving Our Neighbors webinar featuring Marty Solomon of the BEMA podcast.
How we engage with neighbors who are going through difficult times or who have been marginalized is extremely important. HOPE
worldwide encourages volunteers of all kinds to engage in ways that are respectful, relational, participatory, strength-based, and justice-informed.

Our goal at HOPE worldwide is to engage every member connected to our organization, and for every engagement to be transforming. We invite members to engage in three practical ways: advocate, participate, and donate. When you do all three, you can experience full engagement with HOPE worldwide.
Help support our mission as we seek to inspire greater hope around the globe!
