HOPE worldwide
Germany is excited to announce the first ever HOPE Youth Corps Berlin 2019. We welcome volunteers from all around the world in Germany’s capital, a metropolis that overflows with culture, rich history, and one of the best examples successful globalization.
A major addition to this multicultural blend was the arrival of about
180,000 refugees
from Syria in 2015, when they made their way to Berlin looking for shelter. Their arrival let to significant conflict on the political level, but in spite of those challenges they were legally approved to stay in Germany.
Although their culture was a tremendous gain to the society of Berlin, integration remained stagnant due to issues such as language barriers and the lack of general acceptance of them from the local citizens of Berlin.
The program we are launching is a mentoring program that aims to help these people integrate and thrive in Germany. We aim to help resolve legal issues, teach English and German, renovate the refugee camp they are staying at or just spend time with them and build lasting friendships.
We are looking for motivated young women and men to help kick start this new project.
Secondly, we will look after another part of Berlin’s population that is often forgotten about - the seniors. 20% of Germans are 60 or older. 3 out of 10 citizens within that age group are either completely isolated from their families or get visited once every two months. In Berlin alone, that is around
240,000
people who feel abandoned. In response to this pressing yet under-addressed issue, HOPEww Germany started the “HOPE Seniorenzentrum” (HOPE senior center) back in 1997. We focused on teaching the elderly classes in topics ranging from IT to art and provide them with a social space to engage with each other.
We will renovate the space and teach classes depending on their fields of interests and abilities. In addition, we will spend time with the elderly and hear some of their stories about the Berlin wall during the Cold War and/or personal experiences throughout the last century of German history.
Lastly, we will be evangelizing on local campuses in Berlin, such as the Free University of Berlin for Social Sciences and the Technical University of Berlin. We will have training in cold-contact outreach, which will help us as we lead Bible talks and Bible studies on campus..
Of course, we will also go around the city to see major attractions as well as famous hipster-capital’s secret hotspots.
We can’t wait to welcome you to Berlin and are so grateful for your willing heart to sacrifice two weeks of this coming summer to serve together.
