UPDATE: Responding to Hurricanes Helene & Milton

November 8, 2024

HOPE worldwide is responding in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, and other areas affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

UPDATE: NOVEMBER 8, 2024

HOPE worldwide organized disaster clean-ups in Sarasota, Florida for communities affected by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton.

Over the weekend, HOPE worldwide embarked on a crucial mission to Sarasota, Florida, to assist with the disaster cleanup following the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. Our disaster relief truck and trailer journeyed through Georgia and Florida, bringing much-needed aid and support to communities severely affected by the hurricanes.

The trip was a testament to the power of community and volunteerism. HOPE worldwide’s team, along with numerous dedicated HOPE worldwide volunteers, worked tirelessly to help restore normalcy to the lives of those impacted by the storms. The response efforts were not limited to Sarasota; the team also extended their support to Augusta, Georgia, showcasing their commitment to aiding multiple communities in need.

The cleanup operations were multifaceted. Volunteers engaged in mucking and gutting, a process that involves removing water-damaged materials from homes to prevent mold growth and further structural damage. This task is critical in the aftermath of flooding, as it helps to ensure the safety and habitability of affected homes.

In addition to mucking and gutting, the team tackled trash and tree cleanup. The hurricanes had left a trail of debris, including fallen trees and scattered trash, which posed significant hazards and impeded recovery efforts. Volunteers worked diligently to clear these obstacles, making the environment safer and more navigable for residents.

Recognizing the urgent need for power and equipment, HOPE worldwide also provided tools and generators where needed by the affected communities. These resources were vital in enabling residents to begin the rebuilding process. Generators, in particular, were crucial for those who were still without power, allowing them to maintain some level of normalcy and comfort during the recovery period.

The success of the cleanup efforts was largely due to the overwhelming support from volunteers. People from various backgrounds and communities came together, united by a common goal of helping those in need. Their dedication and hard work were evident in every task they undertook, from the physically demanding labor of mucking and gutting to the meticulous work of clearing debris.

The volunteers’ efforts were not only instrumental in the physical cleanup but also provided emotional support to the affected residents. Knowing that there were people willing to help and stand by them during such a challenging time brought a sense of hope and solidarity to the communities.

HOPE worldwide extends its deepest gratitude to all the volunteers who participated in the disaster cleanup. Their selflessness and compassion made a significant difference in the lives of many. We would also like to thank the residents of Sarasota and Augusta for their resilience and cooperation during the recovery efforts.

As recovery efforts continue, HOPE worldwide remains dedicated to providing ongoing support to the affected communities. We encourage everyone to stay involved and contribute in any way they can, whether through volunteering, donations, or spreading awareness. Together, we can build stronger, more resilient communities ready to face future challenges.

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 27, 2024

Please pray for those affected by Hurricane Helene. The National Hurricane Center reports that Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida's Big Bend as a Category 4 storm, causing dangerous storm surge and widespread power outages in Florida and Georgia.

Helene is now barreling toward North Carolina and the Tennessee Valley, bringing damaging winds, life-threatening flooding, and potential tornadoes. Heavy rainfall is expected in the Southeast and southern Appalachians, with up to 20 inches in isolated areas. Tropical storm conditions are expected to persist along the Georgia and South Carolina coasts.

HOPE
worldwide is actively assessing the situation and preparing assistance.
