HOPE worldwide Hosts Fun Run in Malaysia to Support Sustainable Agriculture Programs for Low-Income Families

HOPE worldwide Malaysia's 2024 Fun Run, in partnership with sponsors including Starbucks Malaysia, Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, and key sponsors Excel Force and KAB, was held on September 8th in the Shah Alam National Botanical Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, one of the largest botanical gardens in the world.

The event raised over RM 80,000.00 (approximately $20,000) for HOPE worldwide's sustainability programs in Malaysia, which provide low-income families with food security and skills empowerment through sustainable agriculture. Other notable sponsors included KPMG, Aeon, IGB, One Living and PUMA.

One recent example of HOPE worldwide's work in Malaysia with sustainable agricultural education was a Train the Trainer (TTT) session that we conducted for the "What A Waste" community. Thanks to a sponsorship with Starbucks Malaysia, we were able to teach this community new ways to repurpose food waste with innovative tools. (see image above)

The September 8th event was not just another run for charity. This was a masquerade fun run. Runners dressed up in recycled materials and made costumes that reflected themes of sustainability. Our amazing participants showed up with tons of energy and enthusiasm, fully embracing the theme, and making every step count for their neighbors in need.

By eliminating finisher medals and encouraging participants to reuse their running shirts, the event was considered a modern-day parable of sustainability. We celebrated the impact of collective action and challenged traditional event practices by taking meaningful steps towards a more sustainable future in our own practices.

The event featured a 3km Masquerade Walk and a 10km Fun Run through Malaysia's most famous botanical gardens. Volunteers, walkers, and runners all contributed to our program and demonstrated that sustainability can be incorporated into many aspects of our lives and charity. Young and old participants kicked off the 3km Masquerade Walk in full costume, showcasing their creativity.

Instead of medals, finishers received potted plants as a symbol of growth as a reminder of the event’s sustainable mission.

The dedication and hard work of all the HOPE worldwide volunteers ensured everything ran (and walked) smoothly. We thank our sponsors and partners, whose generosity turned this event into a reality. Thank you for believing in our mission to create a sustainable future for those in need.
