Hurricane Season 2024: How to Prepare

June 12, 2024

June 1st marks the official start of Hurricane season. HOPE worldwide's Disaster Response team is preparing to respond to major storms and disasters around the country, and around the world.

Hurricane season lasts from June 1st until November 30th. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted a record-breaking 2024 Hurricane Season, so it's time to gear up. As we enjoy days of FUN in the SUN, it is important to remember that being prepared makes all the difference.

Weather service predictions for 2024:

  • 17-25 tropical storms
  • 7 major hurricanes (categories 3-5)

Our Global Disaster Response Team wanted to share 5 ways you and your family can be better prepared and stay safe this summer:

1: Have an emergency plan for you and your family. An emergency plan ensures everyone knows what to do when a storm is approaching. It includes knowing evacuation routes, designated meeting points when separated and emergency contact information.

2: Download disaster alert apps on your phone to get real-time updates and warnings. Apps like FEMA, Red Cross, and local weather services keep you updated on storm tracks, evacuation orders, and emergency instructions.

3: A packed emergency go bag is essential. This bag should contain at least three days worth of supplies: water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, clothing, and basic hygiene items. Don't forget to include supplies for pets and any special items for children or elderly family members.

4: When the power goes out and cell service is down, a NOAA weather radio becomes your lifeline. This device provides continuous updates directly from the National Weather Service, ensuring you receive critical information even when other communication channels fail.

5: Secure your home by installing storm shutters, reinforcing doors, and bringing in outdoor furniture. Create a disaster supply room in your home that is filled with the necessary items like non-perishable foods, water, hygiene products, batteries, flashlights, first aid and more. Also don’t forget to prepare your vehicles as well with these same items because emergencies are unexpected and can strike at anytime.

June is a reminder that preparedness is a continuous effort. By having an emergency plan, installing disaster alert apps, packing an emergency go bag, keeping a NOAA weather radio, and preparing your home & vehicle you equip yourself and your family to face hurricane season confidently.

On a recent visit to serve with HOPE worldwide Bolivia, I had the honor of meeting an incredible young man named Farid. Over the past 8 years, Farid has lived at Casa Esperanza, a boys home for abandoned children, and a longtime partner of HOPE ww Bolivia. For nearly a decade, HOPE ww has come alongside these vulnerable children with literacy, mentorship, and other support programs to help them graduate and find a job and community where they can thrive.

A few weeks ago, doctors, nurses, and over 70 local volunteers joined HOPE worldwide staff in El Salvador to provide medical and dental services free of charge to local communities and celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the HOPE ww Community Service Brigade in El Salvador. Alongside the volunteers were members of the HOPE worldwide leadership team, including CEO Ben Barnett, as well as Leonard Castiglione, the CEO of Ob Hospitalist Group, the largest OBGYN network in America, and Leonel Osorio and Juan Ramon Mateo, HOPE ww Country Directors from Honduras and Guatemala. The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails. -John Maxwell On my recent travels to San Salvador to participate in HOPE worldwide 's Community Service Brigades, I had the privilege of serving alongside many of our HOPE worldwide team members with several medical professionals in a children's school in Suchitoto, where we provided much-needed medical and dental assistance. After an eventful first day of the Community Service Brigade, we boarded the buses to return to our hotel in San Salvador. While everyone enjoyed engaging with the local community, it was evident that we were all fatigued, in need of a shower, and looking forward to dinner. We set off on the hour and a half drive back to San Salvador on two buses. However, about an hour from the hotel, our bus broke down, leaving us stranded on the side of the road. We called for the first bus, which turned around to pick us up. This took about an additional hour to resolve. Imagine the scene: everyone tired, sweaty, and hungry. Amid this unfortunate turn of events, I witnessed exceptional leadership from a local church leader named Josue Ortega.
