HYC Philadelphia: How Being in Leadership Changed HYC

Hope Worldwide • September 8, 2016

Mariah Boger, a GSI, shares her experience with HYC in the past and how this year was different

Being a Global Service Intern (GSI) for HOPE has been absolutely incredible. The group of 20 college kids from around the world are truly an amazing bunch. They are incredible spiritual leaders and I am so honored to have this opportunity to serve al
ong side them. As a GSI, I felt trained and prepared to handle serving on a HYC but I initially let my insecurities get in the way. I've never had to step up and lead a group of people in this capacity and for 2 weeks! It was a ton of fun but it was also really challenging. I was called to step up and immediately be a big sister to the volunteers in my group. A few of the participants had a mutual friend back home who was in a serious accident. I had to step in and be there for the participants and that was honestly really challenging, but God completely lead me through it. He showed me the scriptures to share and the right words to speak. This time on HYC Philly, it wasn't the serving that necessarily
changed my heart, it was seeing God move and work through me that changed my heart. It gave me a new perspective on the power of God
and how he works through individuals. Through HYC, I was dared to serve. But instead of me serving for myself and me doing the serving, it was switched to God working through me in order for me to serve others. God really shaped and molded me this summer and I am pumped to be a GSI in 2017!
