HYC Philadelphia: Opening My Eyes

Hope Worldwide • August 11, 2016

Hana Cole’s recollection of HYC Philly Track 2

HOPE Youth Corps was an incredible experience. I have been a disciple for soon to be 2 years and HYC was a huge growth for me in my relationship with God. I went in with a selfish heart, not knowing what it really meant to serve. Working with the kids and understanding their background and how little they had was so eye opening. The kids were so excited to be at the camp; it was like heaven to them. Even the littlest things excited them and they were astonished by the beauty that lied outside their neighborhoods.

The two girls that I was mentoring came in with nothing but a small, thin sheet to sleep with. We lent them pillows and blankets, but it never stopped bugging me. I began to discern how much I really have and how oblivious I had been to the countless blessings in my life. Another thing that was eye opening was that despite how little they had, they gave so much. I received so much love throughout my time with them and they were always so happy to give me drawings, friendship bracelets, or their last French fry. Knowing that the kids don’t have many opportunities at home, we were determined to make the few days they had at the camp the best days ever. No matter how hot or tired I was, I would give them everything I had, give more energy than I even had, and do everything I could to make them happy. This taught me a great deal about self-denial. I don’t regret the lack of sleep, the multiple runs to the cabin because of a forgotten pool towel, or the endless piggy back rides that strained my back.

After all of it, I can say without a doubt that the kids have me more than I could have ever given them. They opened my eyes to a whole new perspective. Their sweet hearts softened mine and brought me so much joy. I also grew incredible bonds with all of the other HOPE Youth Corps participants throughout the 2 weeks and I was blessed with amazing, spiritual friendships. Leaving brought everyone to tears, but the tears can’t come anywhere close to competing with the amount of laughs and smiles we shared. I’m beyond thankful for having been able to participate in HYC and for the impact it’s had on me.
