On a recent visit to serve with HOPE worldwide Bolivia, I had the honor of meeting an incredible young man named Farid. Over the past 8 years, Farid has lived at Casa Esperanza, a boys home for abandoned children, and a longtime partner of HOPEww Bolivia. For nearly a decade, HOPEww has come alongside these vulnerable children with literacy, mentorship, and other support programs to help them graduate and find a job and community where they can thrive.
Now 18 years old, Farid is making big decisions for his life. Not unlike the 18-year-olds in every community, for the first time Farid is having to make independent decisions as to where he will live, how he will earn a living, what next steps are available for continuing education, and many more tough choices. However, he will navigate these transitions without mom or dad to guide him, without any family or basic resources to support him through inevitable ups and downs of life on his path towards success.
When my family and I arrived this week to participate in HOPEww Bolivia programs, we met Farid as a fellow volunteer. He participated with us the entire week as we painted a mural for a children’s shelter, read books, and provided meals for vulnerable families in need. As a young adult, Farid has found new purpose and direction in serving others and has chosen to volunteer regularly. He has a new job and he is studying to gain entry into the local university. He is also an active mentor to the younger children at the boys home, leading by example and showing them what is possible.
Meeting Farid has reminded me that there is a level of resilience and fortitude that I have never personally had to muster or even imagine. Facing the toughest of odds in life, with so many obstacles stacked against him, Farid walks in hope for his future and he inspires hope for others. I have one word to describe my experience serving with Farid: Respect.
I admire Farid, I am proud of him, and I am so grateful for our new friendship. At HOPE worldwide we believe every child has within them a spark of hope. This young man is fanning these flames, showing the world what hope can endure and what hope can overcome.
