Perspectives from the CEO: A Reversal of Roles

May 31, 2024

Who is helping whom?

"An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

For he who is least among you all--he is the greatest."

-Luke 9:46-48 (NIV)

On my recent travels to El Salvador to participate in a HOPE worldwide Community Service Brigade, I had the opportunity to serve in a local community. Our efforts were concentrated at a children's school in Suchitoto, where we provided much-needed medical and dental assistance.

By the end of the first day, I was extremely fatigued. I had been on my feet the entire day and, suffering from persistent knee pain, I eagerly anticipated finding a place to sit and rest. As the neighbors from the Suchitoto community began to return home, I found a chair outside the room we had designated as the pharmacy. I sat down, leaned forward, and rested my head in my arms.

Suddenly, a young boy approached me out of nowhere. He gently lifted my head and arms, and then hugged my face. Despite the language barrier—he did not speak any English, and I only knew basic Spanish greetings—his gesture spoke volumes. He stayed with me for about five minutes before walking away as quietly as he had approached.

There I was, the CEO of HOPE worldwide, serving this small community of Suchitoto and finding myself fatigued, in pain, and in need of relief and rest. Then, in an unexpected and touching reversal of roles, it was a local child who brought comfort, clarity, reconciliation and connection to me.

This encounter reminded me of the profound impact of our work and the mutual compassion and humanity that binds us all. Often, we go into communities with the intent to serve and uplift, yet we find ourselves on the receiving end of grace and kindness.

This child’s simple act of compassion illustrated the essence of what HOPE worldwide strives to achieve—a world where we lift each other up, regardless of our title or status. A world where we inspire greater hope in one another.

As we continue our mission, let us remember that true service is reciprocal. We give and receive, teach and learn, offer comfort and find comfort ourselves. This experience in Suchitoto has deepened my appreciation for the profound connections we build and the unexpected ways in which we are all in need of care.

Thank you for your partnership in making these moments possible. Together, we continue to bring hope and transformation to communities worldwide. Your dedication and generosity allow us to serve “the greatest among us."

On a recent visit to serve with HOPE worldwide Bolivia, I had the honor of meeting an incredible young man named Farid. Over the past 8 years, Farid has lived at Casa Esperanza, a boys home for abandoned children, and a longtime partner of HOPE ww Bolivia. For nearly a decade, HOPE ww has come alongside these vulnerable children with literacy, mentorship, and other support programs to help them graduate and find a job and community where they can thrive.

A few weeks ago, doctors, nurses, and over 70 local volunteers joined HOPE worldwide staff in El Salvador to provide medical and dental services free of charge to local communities and celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the HOPE ww Community Service Brigade in El Salvador. Alongside the volunteers were members of the HOPE worldwide leadership team, including CEO Ben Barnett, as well as Leonard Castiglione, the CEO of Ob Hospitalist Group, the largest OBGYN network in America, and Leonel Osorio and Juan Ramon Mateo, HOPE ww Country Directors from Honduras and Guatemala. The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails. -John Maxwell On my recent travels to San Salvador to participate in HOPE worldwide 's Community Service Brigades, I had the privilege of serving alongside many of our HOPE worldwide team members with several medical professionals in a children's school in Suchitoto, where we provided much-needed medical and dental assistance. After an eventful first day of the Community Service Brigade, we boarded the buses to return to our hotel in San Salvador. While everyone enjoyed engaging with the local community, it was evident that we were all fatigued, in need of a shower, and looking forward to dinner. We set off on the hour and a half drive back to San Salvador on two buses. However, about an hour from the hotel, our bus broke down, leaving us stranded on the side of the road. We called for the first bus, which turned around to pick us up. This took about an additional hour to resolve. Imagine the scene: everyone tired, sweaty, and hungry. Amid this unfortunate turn of events, I witnessed exceptional leadership from a local church leader named Josue Ortega.
