"Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Live in harmony with one another."
Romans 12:15-16
The sound of children's laughter filled the air as they played soccer with several HOPE worldwide volunteers during the recent Community Service Brigade in El Salvador. These volunteers ranged from college age to middle age, including the CEO of Ob Hospitalist Group, one of America’s largest networks of OBGYN doctors.
You might think this CEO would play easy, but he played so hard that at one point he even dove to the ground for the ball. This was not a soft grassy field. It was basically dirt and rocks. He was playing, like everyone there, with heart. It was a beautiful thing to witness.
I stood on the sidelines, cheering and soaking in the joy of the game. As the game unfolded, I experienced a wide range of emotions. When it was over, we walked across the school property and something did not sit well with my soul. I could not figure out what it was.
It was not until I boarded the bus to return to our hotel that it dawned on me: amidst the joy and laughter, there was envy in my heart.
Deep down, I longed to be on that soccer field; running, kicking, and competing with both the kids and my peers. Unfortunately, severe knee pain stemming from my college football days kept me off the field. In all my years of playing and competing in sports, I had never been content standing on the sidelines.
This feeling of being on the sidelines rather than in the game was disconcerting to me. Then it hit me: God was helping me understand what many people around the world experience daily—the nagging feeling of being left on the sidelines of life, not fully participating.
This revelation was profound. Many individuals are sidelined in our society due to health issues, economic barriers, or other circumstances beyond their control. They watch from the sidelines, unable to engage fully in the opportunities that others take for granted.
Through this experience, God revealed to me the benefits of my own privilege. In most areas of my life, I am on the field, competing and enjoying meaningful connections with other people. This moment of standing on the sidelines offered me a glimpse into the lives of those who feel excluded or marginalized.
It was a humbling reminder of the importance of our work at HOPE worldwide—to bring everyone into the game, to ensure that all people can have the opportunity to participate fully in life’s blessings.
As we continue our mission, let us remain mindful of those who feel sidelined. Let us strive to create inclusive opportunities that bring hope and empowerment to all. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and compassion to our mission to be a passionate force for good in this world. Thank you for joining us in inspiring greater hope in the world.
