HOPE worldwide Receives Its First-Ever Cryptocurrency Donation, Resulting in $10K for India

HOPE worldwide • May 26, 2021

HOPE worldwide has received a groundbreaking donation in the form of prominent virtual currencies, Bitcoin and Ethereum. In early May a $10,000 donation was gifted by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous to support COVID-19 recovery in India just as the country faces another devastating wave of the virus. This donation is the first of its kind for HOPE worldwide, leveraging cryptocurrencies for philanthropic purposes. As many are suffering due to lack of food, medicine and supplies, we are grateful that market gains are being utilized for good.

As HOPE worldwide continues to work with partners to provide immediate relief, we are also expanding global recovery efforts to include economic empowerment that will promote sustainable recovery. The pandemic has dramatically threatened the health and economic viability of millions of people around the globe. With the support of generous donors, over the past year HOPE worldwide has provided immediate humanitarian relief to more than 50,000 people in 78 countries. As this crisis has persisted, it has taken an increasing toll on the economic well-being of our brothers and sisters in the poorest regions of the world. This pioneering gift will provide families in India with immediate relief as well as economic recovery and empowerment.

Bitcoin and Ethereum are based on blockchain technology, a data structure and worldwide payment system that protects digital ledgers using cryptology, presenting a new opportunity for global philanthropy. As these investment markets fluctuate up and down, investors are able to donate appreciated assets to benefit charity and receive potential tax benefits. To fund HOPE worldwide’s vital programs with excellence and proper oversight, cryptocurrency donations are immediately converted to U.S. dollars and put to use according to donor designation. Cryptocurrency donations to HOPE worldwide can be made using our Bitpay account. Click here to donate.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and brother, Dave Tomlinson. Dave was a beloved part of the HOPE worldwide family who served in many capacities throughout his time with us, most recently as Chief Operating Officer before his retirement. He also played an important role in our Global Disaster Response and Community Service Brigades teams, serving alongside his wife, Angela. More than the roles he held, Dave was a cherished friend whose warmth, kindness, and genuine spirit touched so many people. His care for others was evident in the way he served, led, and built relationships with people around the world. Dave had a remarkable ability to encourage, uplift, and connect with people, reflecting God's love in both his leadership and his friendships. We will miss Dave deeply and are grateful for the many ways he gave of himself to HOPE worldwide and to the amazing people we get to serve. We’re holding Angela and their family close in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Dave’s presence will be deeply missed, but his faith, love, and example will remain in our hearts forever and his legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
