In January, many Sunday Suppers were hosted around the country, inspired by the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his vision of the beloved community. Some were small, intimate gatherings, and others were larger community-wide events.
Oahu Sunday Supper
The Oahu Chapter hosted a Sunday Supper at Palama Settlement, an existing community partner that is in an under-resourced part of town. The Chapter has an active presence in this neighborhood where there are many encampments for those experiencing homelessness, a lot of government housing, and is generally under-served.
The Chapter deepened their relationship by hosting this Sunday Supper to honor Dr. King and have meaningful conversations with their friends. Volunteers prepared, served and shared a delicious meal, performed live music, played games with and got to know guests better.
“It was a fun time!,“ said Shelley Galang, Oahu, Chapter Director & Women’s Ministry Leader.
Minnesota Chapter Sunday Supper
The Two Cities Church and MN Chapter hosted an intergenerational Sunday Supper to honor Dr. King and create a space for intentional conversation with people we don’t often share our lives with. Dr. King’s vision of Beloved Community came to life as younger generation guests shared and learned from “more seasoned” friends! We had an incredible meal with PLENTY of deep intergenerational dialogue.
Many Family Groups in the Two Cities Church regularly host a meal with community neighbors throughout the year!
HOPEww Scouts Troop 59
Scouts Troop 59 hosted a Sunday Supper to honor Dr. King and create a space for intentional conversation with their older adult friends. To honor Dr. King’s vision of Beloved Community, Troop 59 prepared, served (restaurant style!) and shared a meal with their friends. Troop 59 has shared several meals with these friends in the past, like the Bingo & Breakfast event a few months prior. Troop 59 always LOVES this time with their friends and this year’s Sunday Supper was just one more shared meal, lots of laughs and great conversation!
